Enter the Dragon (DVD) - £7.99 / (VIDEO) - £11.69

The last film completed by Bruce Lee before his untimely death, Enter the Dragon was his entrée into Hollywood. The American-Hong Kong co-production, shot in Asia by American director Robert Clouse, stars Lee as a British agent sent to infiltrate the criminal empire of bloodthirsty Asian crime lord Han (Shih Kien) through his annual international martial arts tournament. Lee spends his days taking on tournament combatants and nights breaking into the heavily guarded underground fortress, kicking the living tar out of anyone who stands in his way. The mix of kung fu fighting (choreographed by Lee himself) and James Bond intrigue (the plot has more than a passing resemblance to Dr. No) is pulpy by any standard, but the generous budget and talented cast of world-class martial artists puts this film in a category well above Lee's primitive Hong Kong productions. Unfortunately he's off the screen for large chunks of time as American maverick competitors (and champion martial artists) John Saxon and Jim Kelly take centre stage, but once the fighting starts Lee takes over. The tournament setting provides an ample display of martial arts mastery of many styles and climaxes with a huge free-for-all, but the highlight is Lee's brutal one-on-one with the claw-fisted Han in the dynamic hall-of-mirrors battle. Lee narrows his eyes and tenses into a wiry force of sinew, speed and ruthless determination.

It delivers everything that it says on the box. The packaging is so good that I didn't want to open it, but I'm glad I did. It's the best Bruce Lee profile by far and the bonus footage is superb! A must buy.

(CUSTOMER REVIEW)

This film gave me a nice surprise to find it had an emphasis on the female side of kung-fu. The action was still as fast and furious as any other of Yuen Woo-Ping's films and if the choreography had been that much better (obvious speeding up in some parts, strings occasionally over-used), I would have rated this film 5 stars.

The plot is true to the story of how Wing Chun Kung Fu left South Shaolin Temple to be taught to the general public, which is interesting from a historical point of view. The storyline does become a bit tedious at times however, as the usual 'misinterpreted identity' plot device which appears in many Hong Kong movies becomes a bit over-used. Never-the-less I expected nothing more.

The overall quality of the film is increased by the skill and presence of other top-grade performers such as Donnie Yen, although Michelle Yeoh still gives as good as she gets with a show comparable to that in 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'. For people who are interested in Kung-fu films as a genre, or interested in the feminine side of martial arts, then this film is guaranteed to please. It is also unique in showing Wing Chun Kung Fu in use; a style not often included in such films because of the more popular North Shaolin style.
